To create a measure in Power BI Desktop, click New measure in the ribbon. Measures in Power BI are written in DAX and therefore require a basic understanding of the fundamentals in DAX.
In the formula bar, you will be able to create and adjust your measure.
In the example below, we create a measure for the Total Sales Quantity. Which summarizes the [actual_sales_pcs] column in the Transactions table.
The new measure will now appear in the Key Measures table in the Fields list. When selecting the measure a suitable visualization will be generated, in this instance a column chart, which shows the Total Sales Quantity within our dataset. This is a straightforward example of how to create a measure in Power BI and DAX. But keep in mind that there are endless possibilities to create more complex measures and tailor them to your business needs.
